According to Pliny, the most amazing belief about hyaenas is that they imitate human speech among the shepherds’ huts and learn the name of one of them, so as to call him outside and tear him to pieces ( Natural History 8.106). He also reports the belief that those who have a hyaena’s tongue between the sole of their foot and their shoe are not barked at by dogs (28.100).

In a.d. 28, at the height of the treason trials that marred Tiberius’s rule, a certain Titius Sabinus was arrested. His dog could not be driven away from the prison door. When Sabinus was thrown down the Steps of Sorrow outside the prison, it sat howling beside his corpse. Crowds gathered, and it took such scraps of food as people threw to it and laid them by the dead man’s mouth. When his corpse was thrown into the Tiber, it jumped in and tried to keep it from sinking (Pliny Natural History 8.145).
